Photography Studio??

I want to make a mini photography studio in my basement. Tell me everything I need to do this.

What do you want to shoot?
It really depends on how much you really want to spend. If your are shooting photos for ebay you really only need a small table, a full sheet of poster board and one or two lights.

If you are thinking of doing portraits or full body shots then you'll need more room and a backdrop.

Either way you need a way of controlling the light and keep the background clean. (no distracting pictures on the wall or furniture.)

If you go with the small table, just place the poster board (if you can find some without a glossy surface, that would be better) on the table and allow it to gently curve up a wall. This will give you an "infinity" look (no stark change from the table top to the background). Place a light to the left side of the table and shoot away. I prefer "bouncing" the light off of a reflective surface so I don't get hard shadows on the subject.

If you are going full body then there will be more expenses. Seamless backdrop paper is 9 feet wide and not too expensive. You probably will need some sort of lighting equipment....Dynalites are OK but you can spend a LOT of money on lights and different light control products. I prefer light boxes by Cimera. They are not cheap but they make beautiful light.

You will find that your first inroads to studio work will leave you frustrated. The light will not be perfect or the background is dull and lifeless. This is the learning curve and there isn't much you can do about it. The main thing is to have fun and experiment. You'll soon learn what works and what doesn't.

The great strength of photography is that you can play and experiment until you get the look that you want. It doesn't take a lot of money....
I have a mini studio in my dining room. A table is useful depending on what your photographing. I bought two kinda old fashioned stuidio lights and a backdrop from a studio that was going out of business and it works great. Ebay is a pretty good place to get some decent backdrops for a resonable price. To put the backdrops on the wall, I went the cheap way. I bought some long curtain rods and put them on the wall, and some metal hooks things. Put the backdrop on the hooks, hooks on the rod and there you go. Hope this helps a bit. :)
