Photography question-- Golden Hour?

any tips on shooting sunrise/sunset, what settings to put an SLR on, and what effects occur on different settings?

Trying to keep this brief...

Basically, any ideas or tips on shooting the golden hour (the light from sunrise and sunset) you wanna share, please do.

10 points to best answer. :)

Thanks!

Not really any biggies...your camera meter should be able to handle the exposure.

Remember the colour temp is way down and you may have to adjust WB unless you like the effect.

Skin tones will get mighty orangey.

Watch where the shadows fall as they get very long.

HTH.

You need graduated ND filters. Despite the lessening of light, your sky will blow out or your land will be too shadowy without them.

OR, you could make HDR (High Dynamic Range) images if you shoot RAW, bracket, and combine the images in Photoshop.

Other than that it's just experimenting, because those settings vary too much depending on part of the world you're in, landscape surroundings, etc. For that matter, are you photographing buildings or people? You'll need fill flash, preferably with an amber gel, to get natural-looking sunset photos of people - don't go overboard with it, which will make it look weird. In fact, a good reflector often serves as well, but can be tough to handle alone on a windy beach or on a sailboat deck.
