What are your tips on how to do light painting in photography?

Ah, light paintings are so much fun. I've tried a few myself, with some decent results.

- Always use a tripod
- If you have a way to remotely trigger your shutter, that will help a lot... I don't, and I end up with a bit camera shake usuall even with the tripod.
- Try all kinds of different light sources. I've used flashlights and toy lightsabers, both work well. I've also seen people use flares and other types of ordinary lights.
- play with different colored lights or colored gels on flashlights, you can get some awesome effects that way.
- Make sure whoever is holding the light is wearing dark clothing and stands back away from the light.
- Find the darkest place possible since you'll be using a really long shutter speed. Bathrooms or places out in the country where there's no light pollution work well.
use a light paint
Overcast days are fantastic if you can take the painting outside. The only light you'll need is already available. Just don't forget to use a tripod.
If indoors, side lighting is best if you have studio strobes with umbrellas/diffusers. If you don't and just have a onboard flash, bounce the flash off the ceiling or a folded peice of paper rubberbanded to the flash itself creating a bounce for the light. Remember to adjust your angle when shooting though, lest you get a hotspot on the glass of the frame. Again, just don't forget to use a tripod.
Hope this helps. I used to photograph works of art at my college gallery and found all this out on trial and error.
My own success and failings.
5600 Kelvin Temp or Day Light (10 am- 4pm)
or the equal artificial Soft box
make sure not haveing the Hot Spot in Center or one of the corners
Best Luck
