What are some good tips for a youngster starting out in investigative photography/ journalism?

I've just finished Uni and am an amateur photographer too, having just purchased my first film SLR to get to grips with the basics.

I'd like to try my hand at investigative photography at a serious amateur level, firstly to see if I've got what it takes to develop my interest further and secondly to help with law enforcement issues where applicable; I am in the UK myself, so how do I start up?

Is it a good idea to go purposefully looking for trouble, so to speak (with no intent of getting hurt myself) or do I just carry on as normal and hope something falls in to my lap?

Thanks!

Get some work experience at your local paper, you might not be covering interesting stories but it'll give you good experience of getting the right moment and working under pressure/to a deadline.

Go to protests and marches, vigils and demonstrations and build up a portfolio of interesting images. The best thing to get in frame is contrast, so either tonal, emotional, political (remember that pic from the may day riots a few years back of a kid smashing into a McDonalds, protesting against the Capitalist values, whilst wearing a Nike t-shirt, stuff like this is great).

People are starting to get wise to the fact that you're still takingf pics even if you don't have the camera to your face, but you can get good shots this way if you do it quick then pretend to be checking the settings or something

Tune your eye for this kind of stuff and look for it online. Don McCullen etc are good people to study for influences, and Cartier-Bresson of course.

Good luck! (Always keep your camera, several rolls of film at different speeds, and spare batteries with you, and a neck/hand strap give you much more mobility to run around, or away if needed) Source(s): Experience
the best tip HAS to be always carry your camera.
You could visit the middle east, but watch ut - they got a habit of kidnapping media staff.
