I want to get into Photography, but i don't know where to start. Does anyone have any tips for a beginer? |
I am 14 and I need tips on Photography!! I am into photography as well. I post my photos on a website called Flickr.com http://flickr.com/cameras/ That is the cameras page on Flickr. You can look throught all different types of cameras. That's where I went when I was considering buying a new camera. You may also want to go to a camera store and talk to someone there or if you know someone who is already into photography, talk to them. Your first question is if you want to use a film or a digital camera. Next you'll want to decide what type of camera to use. For instance, if you decide you want to use a digital camera, now you have to decide if you want a point and shoot camera, or a DSLR (digital single lens reflex). If you talk to someone at a camera store or someone you know, they can tell you all about the different types of cameras and the pros and cons to using them. Next, you'll want to decide what you'll take pictures of. (people, animals, landscapes, skies, flowers, ect.) Or maybe you'll just decide as you go. I did. Every photographer develops a style. (You don't need to worry about it, it just comes naturally) Some people tend to take pictures with brighter, bolder colors and some people like faded or dull colors. A style is almost like a signature. You will also want to do some research on cameras. Find out how they work and what some different settings on your camera do. Go to a library or a bookstore and look at some photography books. Take your camera everywhere. Everytime you leave the house, make sure you have your camera. Remember that you're just starting out though. You can spend as little as 3 dollars or as much as 10,000 or more (which I wouldn't recommend) Photography has costed me atleast a thousand dollars in the last year, maybe more. I hope you enjoy taking photos. If you have any questions you can email me, I didn't go into detail that much. But the internet is also a good source if you have any questions. Go to the library or bookstore and look at books of photographs to decide what kind of photos you want to take. Digital or film? You'll need a camera. You want to get one that you can set manually because you want to learn the relationships between f-stops and shutter speeds, and learn to control those things yourself, and to focus. Automatic modes are okay too, but you still need to learn how to do them yourself. Do you have friends who are photographers? Go somewhere with them, like a park or beach or downtown or something, and walk around and take pictures. They can show you a lot of things like how to use the sun, how to focus, how to use f-stops and shutter speeds, and how to 'previsualize', how to see the picture in your mind before you take it. You don't need the very greatest camera to start out with. The nice thing about digital cameras is that you can take just as many pictures as you like. You can experiment and take the same picture over and over. You should also learn some photo-editing software (GIMP is free, Photoshop is better if you can get it). Learn to adjust levels, brightness and contrast, because almost every picture you take will benefit from having these things adjusted. It would also be nice to have a photo printer. Post your pics on a photo hosting site on the web and tell all your friends to look at them and tell you what they think! Take a photography class first that will teach you the basics. It's actually a lot of learning but if you're really cut out for photography and have the patience to see that it's more than just pushing a button and taking a picture you can expand from there by talking to your teacher or classmates. It's how I got started :) Got to the Library (or retail bookstore) and check out a few books, Get a "bridge" camera for starters such as: Fujifilm s5200 Fujifilm s600fd Canon s2-is or s3-is Panasonic DMC-FZ8K etc. etc. these all have some degree of manual control as well as total auto. shoot tons and tons of pictures! :) Hope this is a help. p.s. I am 15 and am also an aspiring Photographer. |
