Places to visit in California?

I am thinking about taking my boyfriend on a road trip up the coast. We live in San Diego so I want to head north for a few days. Some places I had in mind where San Fran, Catalina Island, San Simeon, San Luis Obispo. Anyone have any ideas? I was thinking of going Hearst Castle, riding the gondolas in Long Beach, maybe a hot air balloon ride. Any other attractions we should stop for? Everyone is giving me cities to visit but I need attractions too. I want to take him to special places we have never been before, maybe some hidden spots or areas that aren鈥檛 too, too popular.

Here are things he likes/enjoys to help narrow down the suggestions:
1. Music (he loves singing, he plays the bass and knows a little guitar, and just loves music in general)
2. Beach
3. Scenery
4. Photography
5. Art (he draws very well and is interested in any kind of art or cartoons (loves comic books)

If you go to S.F. you must go to Mitchell Brothers. Beyond fun and excitement

If going to Frisco, go to Palace of the Fine Arts. It's so pretty. Good place to take pictures. A good beach to go to take pictures of the sunset is Califas beach in San Clemente off the 5 fwy.
