Do you know of any charitable organizations that may need a volunteer photographer? |
I am an amateur photographer looking to get some experience with portraits and build a portfolio. Do you know of any organizations that I might be able to volunteer with? Take photos of animals at the local humane society! Many of them have websites featuring their animals but because they don't have a dedicated or knowledgeable photographer, there are often missing photos of animals or poor quality photos. If you volunteer for them, you would be building your portfolio but also helping animals find new homes - how rewarding! Animals are a great subject for photography as well. They would be happy to help you. I am doing it for MY local human society. :) Sierra Club, Nature Conservancy, and the United Way are always looking for imagery. contact a local fire department or police station to do portraits of their personnel. Almost any non-profit community based organization would love to have you photograph for them and cover events. It's as simple as asking the right person. They will handle any PR, event organization, etc. Pick something you are interested in and go for it. |

If you know flash then get some and sync cables, they are far more portable than constants. From the style of your shoots I think constant will suit you better. A Canon XTi is a great entry level SLR. Has Many features that would allow to you take the images you mentioned. Also an endless supply of options (lenses, flash, filters ... Maybe? I mean, anything for the sake of art, right? ;-) ...Just keep looking for some inspiration. Don't use the pop up flash. Set up some work lights or something and use a bounce so that the light is directional. Make sure you don't up light th... hey you take really good pictures!
