Speedlight or Strobes?

I would like to see what everyones opinions are.

I need to decide between the two because I have space limits. I see amazing images that photographers are creating using strobes.

I would like to do portraits, product, indoor architecture...pretty much everything and anything.

Does this sound like a good idea?

I currently have an SB600. I also have a light tent with two daylight balanced fluorescent lights for even light projects. You can't get creative with it :(

A "Speedlight" is just Nikon's brand name for their on-camera strobes. I assume you are asking about adding off-camera flashes?

If you buy the SB-800 it can remotely control your SB-600 in iTTL Commander mode. You can also buy an adapter to mount a hot-shoe flash onto a light stand and also use modifiers like umbrellas or soft boxes.

If you have limited space then you have less need for more powerful strobes (monolights or power pack based). I've wanted to buy a set of Alien Bees myself but I can't justify it. I get all the multi-strobe effects I need with just a SB-800 on the shoe and my old SB-24 set to manual power output with a Wein Peanut sensor as a slave. If I need a third lighting angle I bounce some of the SB-24's light from a reflector. Same deal when I use hot lights (reflectors create extra lights).

With digital cameras it is easy to get it right by just trial and error.

I use strobes when I'm in the studio, but everywhere else I use the Canon Speedlite 580EX II... it's great!

If you are limited in space, get the Speedlight.
