How does professional portrait photographers soften their photos using photoshop cs2.?

I tried using surface blur and airbrushing but it still does not look like the professional soft look. I am talking about when you look at a good professional portrait it's overall picture looks soft . How do you do that ?

Many professional photographers use a soft focus filter on the camera to get the look you mention. This has been done for many years, long before Photoshop. It is still a good way to get the look.

An approximation of this effect is possible using the Gaussian blur filter in Photoshop.

Most Photoshop professionals use layers and layer masks to create these effects because you can have greater control over the results. My advice is to start understanding how to use layers more and then try the blur and other filters.
