Do you tip a photographer that is doing professional photos for you?

I have having some boudoir portraits done of me today as a Christmas gift for my husband who is currently deployed. I was just curious if I should give a tip to the photographer and if so, how much?

As a photog, my prices are all inclusive and no tips are expected. I charge based on the job requirements and expenses then add in a profit margin based on my time and talent.

I have been tipped at weddings. Generally I will graciously accept it and turn the money over to a money tree or pin it on the brides dress or whatever other means is available. If the tip is given after the event I always try to include additional products or services to the couple. Some wedding photogs will expect tips and even go as far as asking for them. They usually charge lower base rates to get the job and dont earn what they should or could. The client will usually feel like they have been scammed in some way by paying more than they expected or were quoted... kinda like dealing with a used car salesman.

If you think your photog did a great job and want to tip then go ahead and do it. But a better choice would be to give him something that would benefit his future business. A few examples:

Many photogs collect wardrobe items for future shoots. Donate your lingere, shoes, etc to his cause.

Recommend him to your friends and family and coworkers.

Sign a model release that allows him to market your photos.

Ask what his expendable are (film, cd's, batteries) and give him those items as a gift.

Ask where he shops for camera gear and give him a gift certificate to that store.

Good luck and remember to smile just before the click!

you don't really need to tip them for say, they don't live off tips like waitresses, they get their money from what you have to pay them anyway. But, if you feel you really really should give him a tip or so, it should be around five dollars.

i would give them more than that, only if i thought the pictures were absolutely beautiful. Gas is getting expensive, save your money for that, lol. I mean, you don't really tip people unless their are like waitresses. But, if you did, there would be nothing wrong with it.

Nope, you do not need to tip them. Photographers do not work off tips. If you think your photographer did a nice job, then compliment him.

If you WANT to tip them, then by all means, go ahead. No one can argue with extra money.

No, I've never been given a tip on any job but that's not necessary since I charge what the job is worth and don't expect the client to pay extra.
