What are some tips you have for photographing people of different skin colors?

I am photographing a friend of mine today. I am Caucasian, he is Black. I would describe him as a darker skinned, Black man. This is mainly a portrait shoot.

My experience is mostly with people of White or light-skinned ethnicities. I would love some tips about lighting or anything you have learned in your experiences as photographers. And, how it might compare with photographing someone who is Caucasian.

I'm really seeking tips from professionals, not amateurs. Thank you. Please state your experience in photography as well as providing the information. And, if you have a link to your portfolio, please paste it so I can see the results of your shoots.

Well, it is a natural light studio. And, also outside. The metering tip is useful, though I tend not to use metering as I am developing the expertise of photography through intuition, trial and error. Old school, hopefully becoming a master photographer someday.

I will also consider using the negative EV value. I guess I wasn't sure if I needed more light than usual or if I should try to light him more evenly or what.

The same rules as far as posing and where to cut them off still apply. Are you going to be taking the photos using available light or in a studio?

The thing to remember is that if you meter off his skin, your camera will tend to overexpose him. You need to dial in some negative EV to correct for it.
