Do you think I have what it takes

to become a portrait photographer?

I took that picture recently (along with several others) and was complemented on them.
I am 15, and have some minor photography experience.
I have been editor of my school yearbook for the past 3 years.

I was wondering what you guys have to say.
I am open to all criticism.

Also, what goes into becoming a portrait photographer?
(schools etc)

The photo is nice, but nothing great. A few points:

Outside in sunlight is not good unless you use a fill flash to open up the shadow areas. Notice the sunlight spots in the picture. You need to even the light.

A rainy or yucky cloudy day is best for outdoor portraits. The colors always come out better.

There are national companies that do school portraits and things of that nature. They take inexperienced photographers and train them. The problem is that the pay is lousy. If you ever want to make money in the business, you will have to invest and start your own business. Salaried positions in photography suck.

Just keep practicing.

The background is somewhat distracting and her arms are just kind of "there". The tree is kind growing out of her shoulder and head. I think a better shot would have been to nix the tree and move her to the right and completely blurred out the background. Have her do something with her hands- hold a flower, a book, some kind of prop. All in all a good photo though. Take a peek above the viewfinder before you shoot and look for distractions.
If you looking to be a portrait photographer major in business. Business skills are more important than photographic skills.
