What are some good self-portrait photography ideas?

I'm trying to break away from the barrier of emo-angled pictures and such, and boring photos. I need some interesting ideas, please!

Every once in a while you can find a cool idea for a picture.
Just the other day I was looking through some books on a book shelf, and got inspired to take a picture with the camera inbetween the books, so it looked like someone hiding on the other side of the books, taking a picture of me browsing through the books, looking for a good one.
My look is natural, I'm not smiling or anything, just acting normal, looking for a book on the shelf. The cool thing about it, is that the camera is positioned so the picture looks like it's taken from one of the books perspective.
It's very cool, I recommend you trying new angles, and taking pictures by windows with a lot of light. Try getting some of the light on your face, but not fully on your face, say just some on your eyes to highlight them. Like stand facing out the window, so the sun can shine in on your face, then position the camera in front of you so you can capture all the light on your face.
If you turn around and take your picture with the light behind your face/body, the picture will have the sunlight behind you BRIGHT, and you will be dark. That's not a good picture, because the main focus is the light in the window, and not you. It makes it sort of like a silhouette, which would be cool ir you turn sideways.

I think this is enough typing. But here are some other ideas.

Take your picture from weird angles, and make people ask how you took those pictures, or how you got those cool angles.
Get someone to take a picture of you through the window, so, have them go outside, and take the picture through the window (if you can see you good in the picture) but get the frame of the window to add element, and make it more interesting. Well, so you'll know it's through a window, and not just a straight up plain shot.

lol Yeah, I guess my mind is a little overly creative =P

polaroid camera

oh yes.

One of the most common elements in a self portrait is your arm outstretched and holding the camera. Find one of those extensions that allows you to hold the camera further than arm's length and without having to reach your arm out there. Or try some shots with the camera on a tripod and using the timer so you can get into position. Your reflection can be fun too. There's a whole site dedicated to that (http://mirrorproject.com).

Experiment with light. Try using focussed lights in all different places, and/or colored lights. Change the ambient light, background light, etc.

Try making funny faces while you shoot. :)

Technical issues. Try to get someone to shoot for you. IF you really want to do Self-Portraits, you need to use your camera as it was designed.

Use a tripod, or place the camera on a stable surface while using the timer function.

Dont zoom too close. You can make minor adjustments with crop tool's.

Use plenty of good light. Shoot outdoors if you can. Pick the backdrops you want. Using some thing as a prop, from teddy bears, skateboard, flowers, umbrellas, or whatever, keeps hands from looking awkward. Having a little something in the foreground, isnt a bad thing, but dont make the shot too cluttered. Use accesories as props, ie., sunglasses propped on the head, fingering a necklace, etc...., to give your pics a little personality.

Over do the makeup, just a little bit, focusing on framing the eyes. But dont over do the general appearance.

Use a mirror behind the camera, to get your pose settled, so you can see your expressions, the angle of your body, etc..., before the shutter trips.

Hope this helps.

Use a camera that will keep clicking on it's on. Put it on a tripod set it to take a shot about once every five seconds and then just start striking poses in front of it. Dance, sing, do whatever floats your boat. Shoot with different light, background, outfits, etc until you have enough shots to go through. Pick the really great ones and throw out the rest. It will be fun and the more you experiment with it the better the shots will be.
