I'm building a portfolio. What's a visual theme?

The portfolio requires that six pictures out of 12 have a "visual theme" (I'm applying to a photography program, undergrad).
What exactly does that mean? They weren't very specific.
Could it be all documentary style photos? All BW photos? All portraits? I'm confused.

Obviously, if you are applying to be in a program you aren't in and the instructor isn't going to help!
A theme is 6 photos that have a binding element(s). Each one would contain the same item or depict the same emotion, anything that ties them together. The other 6 should be the best shots you have.

If the class you are in is a black and white class, then black and white is appropriate.

Visual theme could be abstract nudes, abstract industrial, legs and feet, windows, abandoned buildings, etc


The photos have a theme. It is actually easier to shoot a couple of rolls on the theme and let your instructor help you choose which ones to print. Then print them as perfectly as you can. The other six could be the best from your work during the term or fresh work maybe based upon past assignments, but reshot using the new skills you have gained during your class.
