I'm trying to set up a portrait studio in my small apartment. Why do I need umbrella stand? New to photography

I have a Pentax *ist DL 6.1 mp camera and I'm new to the craft. Friends want me to take their pics.

With an umbrella stand you can use a whtie umbrella like a big diffuser to soften the light, or with a silver umbrella you can use it as a big reflected source. Using a light on a stand will give you more options with lighting than just using a flash mounted on the camera.
You need reflected light as well as direct light.
white pieces of cardboard or white sheets pinned appropriately to the wall will do the job as well. More bother to set up. Less money to get (you probably have something suitable already around in your house.).
Umberella is for you to use under rainny day and sunny day, stand for you to support your camera.
