What are the rules to make a great self-portrait (photography)? |
What are the rules to make a great self-portrait (photography)? That's self portrait for my avatar. Took me several tries before I was happy. I applied all the rules for any portrait.. you want a lighting ratio of about 2 or 3 to 1 (this gives the photo depth) and you want to accent your subject best features and minimize flaws. Normally Men tend to look better leaning forward a bit and for women, thinks an S curve - head tilted slightly to the side or even a slight profile. I posted some good references below. Source(s): http://www.photo.net/learn/portraits/... http://www.kodak.com/eknec/pagequerier.j... http://www.lifehacker.com/software/photo... http://www.blackphoto.com/tutorials/less... Know your best angles and pay attention to shadows and lighting. Practice makes perfect in this area! That is a good question that I would like answered as well, a great self-portrait should say something...it should hit the viewer with more questions than answers, & leave the viewer with awe & Inspiration...remember the Kramer episode in Sienfeld? It's should say something & leave room for more insight...MHO anyway... Why does there have to be rules? Soft lighting directed at your face is always a good idea. This can compensate for a "bad" camera as well. Use a plain background- this makes things much easier! A blanket or bedsheet will do. If you're a chick, look at pinups to get ideas for poses. Use a tripod so your camera is steady! Most digital cameras have timers, so use that feature. |
