Special effects in portrait photography - what to charge? |
I'm about to start a side business in photography and I'm trying to build a price list to offer. I have become pretty proficient in photo shop and have learned to add/create some special effects - a little time consuming but really adds alot and that's what people are wanting from me - should I charge by the time it takes me or a flat fee for the effect? Any help/suggestions is appreciated! See what others in your area charge for similar services. A very important consideration is to make sure you have a good handle on what you would be paid should you be working for someone else. Businesses work on a profit, so you would need to add all the Expenses normally incurred to what you would be paid, then set your price accordingly. A little research will go a long way to make sure you don't shortchange your self or not be competitive. I am not at all good at doing special effects using photographs. So, I have to send that work out to a pro. I pay between $150 and $200 an hour for that kind of work and bill the client an extra 15% to cover my work getting the images to the retouch/special effects artist and back when they work on a photo. The cost of manipulating a digital file is less, more like $75 to $100 per hour ... the 15% fee is still added to the invoice. I hope this heads you in the right direction ProPhotog |
