Photography help?

you know in the professional pictures of photographers they take a picture in black and white but theres one item that is in color. I was wondering how do you do that???? Is there a program on the computer??? i know of adobe photoshop but it cost to much is there another one.

Actually - we take them in color and then create a duplicate layer over the original in black and white and then erase the top layer wherever we want color to show through. There is in fact software that you can buy to do this under $100. My recommendation would be Paintshop Pro (which is currently in version 11). You can get this for about 60 or 70 bucks and it is actually a very powerful program. To produce selective color, the steps woud be:

Layer>duplicate layer

Image>Adjustment>Desaturate (there are other ways to make black and white photos but this is easiest)

Then click on the eraser tool (the little icon in the tool palette that looks like a block) and erase whatever part of the black and white photo you want in color.

Here's an example from a wedding that I shot: I did this using the exact technique as above, except I used a more complicated method (the channel mixer) to do the black and white conversion. And while I use photoshop CS, I did this one in Paintshop Pro (the program I mention above).

you would have to turn the photo b & w, and then make a layer and just color in the item , then put it back... yes you can use p[hotoshop, but also programs like microsoft digital suite {under $100} or photoimpact pro {around $100}

its not hard, once you get the hang of it...

my personal favorite is digital suite... easy to use...
The original image is in color. Using Photoshop (other programs may have this feature as well) a copy is made of the image and a copy layer is made of the photograph as well. The actual steps are quite complex and I haven't done this but for one class I took years ago.

Someone here may have the steps written out and can email them to you or they may have a website link they can give you.

The technique is used sometimes in advertising, but I haven't seen it used in a while.

It's called Selective Coloring. See the tutorial below -- it's in Photoshop though. I'm not up on what other softwares you can use, but anything that supports layers and masks.
