Graphic Design/Photo - Any suggestions for a budding amateur Graphic Design Artist and Digital Photographer!?! |
I am very well experienced with Graphic Design and have been using Adobe Photoshop since I was a teenager, but I do not have a degree. I think that by paying to go to school and get a degree is a waste of time and money. Is there another way!?! Any other suggestions for the professionals!?! Hi. I just graduated college....film school to be exact and my BA is for film production, just this past December. I now work as a freelance Graphic Designer/Artist at a few companies (two of them are in the film industry). So yes, there is jobs out there for the "informally" trained designer, BUT I do recommend at one point taking some classes and getting some experience. There's life after Photoshop. I use all of Adobe's products (the Creative Suite) and then some to do my job for work and for my own personal art. I'm beginning to even learn motion graphics to do film titles and such at some point. Listen, they say the same about film school, that it's a waste of money and all that jazz. Maybe it is, but really in the end I did the BA for film -magna (cume) laude- all for me. And I'll be doing my MFA in Graphic Design this coming year all for me as well. I could care less if it got me a job or not, I'm just happy I did it, is all. And not to mention, it did/will teach me a lot of things I don't already know. And trust me, there are things you don't know. I mean, you could go on job forums and look for employment for people with "photoshop skills", but....challange yourself, man. I did. I didn't know the whole creative suite, but I taught myself. And had others teach me so I could increase my knowledge, experience, qualifications and eventually, my pay. Good luck out there. It's a mean place. NOPE! Unless you want to get certified in Adobe products. Usually, education of graphic design is a major necessity along with experience. Also, you could possibly join AIGA and meet other professionals. Typically if you know someone in this field, it is easier to get a job in graphic design. There is plenty of work for good artist. Start by giving your stuff away and watch the jobs come in. Just knowing the trade doesn't seem to be enough anymore. I started using Photoshop at 2.0 and that didn't mean a thing. Not until I got my Adobe Certified Expert, Adobe Certified Professional and Adobe Certified Instructor did people really start paying attention to me. Once they say that, they took the time to look at my work. Getting your ACE, ACP and ACI isn't all that pricey in comparison to other certifications out there. If this is truly what you want to do and not pay for a degree, then invest in the time and money. Adobe Certified Expert Adobe Certified Professional Adobe Certified Instructor |
