Film and Slide Film? |
Are professional photographers still usuing film or slide file today? Most editorial and advertising photographers used to use transparency film because; what you see is what you get. Yes there are some slight variations between films and between film manufacturing, but generally the images reflect the light and color that was present when the image was exposed. Now that we are shooting mostly with digital cameras (except for medium and large format) we get the best of both worlds 鈥?accurate color and more exposure latitude that is inherent in negative film. If you shoot transparency film a lot, you will find that you quickly learn how to expose properly because over exposure will wash out the highlights and there is no way to 鈥渟ave鈥?the image when that happens. Color negative film is a whole different ballgame. Unless you shoot a color chart at the beginning of each roll, there is no way for the printer to know what the colors should look like in the final print. It is all a guess on the part of the machine. You will sometimes even see sunrises or sunsets that have been corrected to remove the red typically found is these scenes. Professional portrait and wedding photographers, who are still using film, use negative for two reasons. 1) The labs they use are set up to print skin tones that are very close to the subjects鈥?skin and 2) there is larger exposure latitude offered by negative materials. I've got a friend who teaches photography for a living, including digital, but for his own hobby is a luddite and is using large format negatives with antique cameras. There are a few that still use it. yes alot of them do |
