Digital Camera Advice?

I've been doing research on digital cameras. I want to buy a new one. I've had three in the past: a Sony Mavica, a Canon Poweshot 80, and currently I own a Sony Cybershot. I haven't been entirely satisfied with any of them, but that's partly because I'm interested in "serious" photograpy.

In the past I had two 35mm cameras I absolutely love: A Canon AE Program, then later a Nikon N6006. I'm looking for a digital camera that rivals one of those in both quality and functionality. I'm not a professional photographer, but I'm a notch or two above the "point & shoot" variety.

Three of my biggest complaints about the digital cameras I've owned in the past is the fact that focusing is not as acurate as I'd like, the lousy quality in low-light situations, and the slow response time in recording a picture (I've missed a lot of great shots because of that).

Any advice on what brands and models to look at would be appreciated. Thanks

Nikon is more backwards compatible with their lenses. Since you have a N6006, (great, underrated camera, in my opinion, I have one I still use for backup at weddings) I would go with a Nikon dSLR. Entry level is D40, there is D50, just a little more, and D80, a nice step up. And D200, giant step up. Any dSLR will be way better than a digicam at high ISO.

You will need a wide angle lens to compensate for the crop factor. The kit lens is all right to start with. Nikon has some fabulous wide lenses. I have also read good things about the Tokina 12-24.
