Getting a Photography Degree online?

I would like to become a professional photographer and am looking into photography schools in north Texas, and the only one I can find is a 4 year university. I am a 35 year old stay at home mom so going with a 4 year degree would be exhausting. I've looked into the Academy of Art online photography programs and noticed they are different than their classroom programs. Can I learn what I need to online? What are your opinions on online and classroom programs?

I am a professional photographer and have been for 9 years. You do not need a degree. You can take a photography class at any local university and get a certification. Your work is what clients will look at and you will have to have a basic knowledge of technical skills such as: aperature, shutter, lenses, lighting, and all the other how to's. Your composition is something you can practice. You can also buy some books and save yourself a lot of money by learning these things on your own.

I have done over 250+ weddings and hundreds of commercial photography assignments. All of which I have done without a degree. Save yourself the money and just take some basic classes, and then just get out there and sell yourself.

Good luck. As Nike says, "Just Do It!" Source(s): check out my website: www.photomaine.com
NO DEGREE!!
1 Hot Photographer is so right. (I LOVE the photos on her site). All you need is some basic equipment and the drive to do it! Get some basic how-to books. I have learned more from these than any photo class I have taken. Also get subscriptions to Popular Photography and Outdoor Photography. Those magazines have new up to date tips and tricks that the books don't have. Another great source is Flickr.com. I get feedback from others on my photos and see what others are doing. I have gotten some of my best inspiration from other peoples photos on there. http://flickr.com/photos/nickleen/...

I'm just starting out so I'm sort of in the same boat as you. Smugmug has a great service where you can upload photos and your clients can purchase them straight from there. You can customize a lot of things on the site and with the pro account you can set your own prices on photos. Get some business cards printed for next to nothing at Vistaprint and submit your business info to your local phone book. Create a nice little portfolio as well. Blurb.com prints quality books for very little. What I have done is take lots of photos for friends and family as if they were paying clients - they get some nice photos and you get lots of practice.
I tried Academy of Art and the only thing they seem interested in with the online programs is taking my money.
Another route to go is to contact a local established photographer and ask if they need help with any shoots for free. It usually involves holding things for them. That will give you some good contacts and great experience.
If you still feel the need to take classes, look into community art classes. They are usually once a week and very inexpensive. You can compare tips and get constructive critisism from a wide array of other photographers.

Good Luck!
You should check into the New York Institute of Photography - www.nyip.com They are the biggest online photography school. Whether you want to become a professional photographer or simply enhance your basic skills they can help.
