Is photography a good career choice? |
I am 26 and it is the only thing that I am even a little bit interested in pursuing. Is it a good career choice? Can you make enough money at it or would it be a better side job? How much do professional photographers make? My dream would be to be a national geographic photographer, but I would also need a journalism degree, right? If this is your passion, you should go for it. If you want to be a journalistic photographer, a degree in journalism would open doors for you (I have one, not for photography, but it certainly helped me get my first newspaper and broadcasting jobs). You could also open a photography business, photographing weddings, parties, etc. Or you can listen to the police scanner and go to freeway accidents. Insurance companies will often buy the photos -- especially if they have no others of the wreck scene. You could also freelance as a paparazzo, shadowing the rich and famous to sell pictures to supermarket tabloids (no kidding, some of these guys make six-figure incomes, but they are regarded as a bit sleazy). Source(s): Personal knowledge I think it is a better side job, but I wouldn't let it stop me from pursuing it. I think most degrees in the ARTS aren't very promising careers. But they are passionate ones. If you are ok with having an OK lifestyle and a job you love to do over a GREAT lifestyle and a job you hate, I say do the photography. However, you should try working a SEARS portrait studio first, to see just how annoying taking pics of people can be. I worked there for 3 months and couldn't take it anymore!!!! Good Luck!!! And remember photography still makes a great hobby!!! MY BRAIN It is a bit late for you to be asking these questions. If you do not even know what type of living a photographer makes, then most likely you do not have the knowledge to turn it into a career. I would suggest doing it on the side as a hobby. Photography is a fine art and any type of fine art makes for a challenging career. Those who are successful in fine art are those who are very passionate about what they do (Or are just subpar artists with VERY good marketing skills i.e. Wyland) And by your questions it is obvious that you are NOT passionate about photography otherwise you already would have chosen it as a career and would know how much you can make. I know lots of Fine artists and Photographers who can not pay their loans/debts without taking a second job. |
