Is pursuing a career in Photography worth it?

I'm really getting into photography because I love taking photos. But will it be worth it because I hear alot of people say photographers do not get paid very well. Even though if I don't decide to become a professional photographer, I won't stop taking photos.

How is the salary?

The salary depends on where you are located. If you're located in a very rural area then the pay will be lousy. If you're located in highly populated areas or reasonably large cities then the money is reasonably good. The money depends on the quality of your work, how well people like it, and how good you are at marketing. People always do well in doing something that they enjoy doing, period. Is it worth it -- to me it is but that may vary according to each individual. I am sure that most successful photographers would agree with me. Everytime I work I make a minimum of $125 per hour.
iT's worth it if u like it..well the salary is different depending onwhereur working
Not great. I work in a small studio and bring home an amount no higher than $2000/month. But thats just me (I'm also a full time student, part time employee). You can work in a bigger studio and make a lot more, you can do commerical work and make tons, stock photography is hit or miss. If your good, and you work hard to advertise you'll make a lot. Money wise, photography careers are 90% business, 10% photography.
Like actors. A few are making great money, but the majority just squeaks by. Depends on HOW good you are and whether you can get the attention of some of the big movers (like Playboy). ~
Some top photos can get over $100,000.00
It really depends on a few factors.

Some photogs make decent money, but also spend a lot of $$ on equipment, studio, and regular business expenses.

Most dont pull a salary, and work job to job, so they have to put a lot of effort into self promotion, and building a clientel base.
Like everyone is saying, it depends. I have a BFA in Photo, had my own wedding photo business for 5 years. Just made enought to get by, but I enjoyed it. Also have a BSED in Art Ed and taught Photography in high school. Enjoyed that also and made more money at that.
There's a difference between "career" and "expensive hobby". For me it's more an expensive hobby. In addition to being a photographer, you need to be a good marketer to make it a career.
