How to take professional quality indoor digital pictures with no flash and no camera stand? |
I guess I need a professional digital camera, but which one, and with what equipment? An example of what I want to do: I see photographers taking excellent shots at concerts (indoor) without using a flash, and holding the camera in their hands. If you do get a DSLR or the like, get one with high ISO setting (1600-3200), a lens with a big aperture (F/2.8 or lower would be nice) and Image Stabilization (for Canon) or VR (for nikon) which gives you the ability to handhold about 3 stops less then you normally would be able to. Also as mentioned, your shutter speed should not be lower then the focal length you're shooting at, i.e. at 200mm, your min shutter speed is 1/200. Any lower and it will show up blur unless you have IS/VR assist. due to the low lighting in indoor environments your shutter speed will be to low to produce a crisp image, no matter which camera you buy. If you must take low light pictures buy 800-1600 ISO film or set your digital camera to the 800-1600 ISO setting. This will allow your shutter to be quick but will produce noise (with a digital camera) or grain (with a film camera) It is possible to improve grainy images but you lose image quality in the process. First, switch your ISO to 1000 or more if possible. Second, don't zoom more than the speed of the shudder --> for example, if your shudder speed is 1/125th of a second, dont zoom to more than 125mm. Third, try to use something else (that doesnt move) as a support -- most pros carry bean bags with them.
