An affordable camera that is comparable to the Canon 450D?

Okay, I dont know very much about cameras, so I really need help! I'd like to get a gift for my boyfriend and my anniversary.

My boyfriend has been talking a lot about this new Canon digital SLR-- I think its the 450D? I asked a friend who knows a lot about cameras and he suggested checking out the Canon Rebel.

I'm kinda on a budget, I cant really go past $700 max.

Keep in mind, this would be his first professional Digital SLR, but hes a great photographer and he really has a passion for it.

Any suggestions as to what camera would be a good gift for him? Comparable and affordable?
(Also, If you happen to know, I'll need to shipped to Germany...)

The Canon 450D is the same camera as the Rebel (XSi) in the States.

While the Canon 450D is a fine camera, it is not considered a professional camera, although in the right hands it can be used to produce professional quality images. The 450D and Nikon D60 are considered "entry level DSLR's".

That said, if your boyfriend owns Canon cameras and lenses, buy all means buy the 450D camera and share lenses with him.

If neither of you already own any 35 mm SLR or DSLR equipment, then take a look at the Nikon DSLR's as well.
