What is the recommended flashgun for the Nikon D3?

I own the D3 and I have recently got into professional photography i have a job coming up and was wondering what flashgun is recommended for the D3 as i have just moved over from Canon.

SB800, SB600, or SB400 will work and you'll have full iTTL functionality.

Older Nikon flash guns as well as other 3rd party flash guns
(Metz, etc.) will also work but you won't have full iTTL feature set.

Additionally you can 'probably' also use the Nikon Macro flash (R1, R1 C1) systems but you should check directly with Nikon for that.

I use the Nikon SB-800 as a back up and the Metz 45cl-4 Digital as my main Flash it is far stronger and has fill flash.

For a D3, the best choice would be the Nikon SB-800. It's Nikon's most powerful flash and give you Command & wireless slave capabilites. The tilting, swiveling head, along with the automatic zooming give you many lighting options.

A slightly less expensive option is the SB-600. I use an SB-600 with my D70 and D200 and find it fills all my current needs.

Both the SB-800 and the SB-600 are great flashes that integrate the Nikon iTTL modes and are parts of a vast Nikon lighting system.

Depends on what you are shooting.
Some photographers, particlualary photojournalists, opt for smaller more conveninet hot shoe mounted units.

I use a Metz CL4 digital flash that connects via a cord and adaptor to the hot shoe on my DSLRs. It is heavier and more cumbersome than the smaller hot shoe models, but it works very well.

As it uses an adaptor to integrate it into the cameras electronics it still can delivery precise flash under camera control. This incudes the functionality of the electronic TTL metering.

If I ever changed brands all I would have to do is buy a new adaptor and keep using the rest of the flash.

You are a pro who move from Can to Nik? and you don't know which flash to use? I think you are bogus man.
