The LCD uses most of the cameras power ... keep it turned off unless absolutely necessary. Finding a camera that has a viewfinder will help a lot. If you do have to use the LCD to compose your shots, then get a camera with IS (Image Stabilization) because shooting at "arms length" can add camera movement not found when shooting using a viewfinder.
