Does anyone know whether film cameras and film are allowed in hand luggage when travelling via America to Oz?

Still using film so want to know if I can carry it on as well as the camera when travelling via America . I know anything going into the hold is subjected to more fierce xraying and will definitely destroy film. So if I can't carry it on then I will need to buy and develop film whilst on holiday. Money situation means planning to get a digital SLR later this year but can't before I go away!

Film cameras are perfectly acceptable in hand luggage, however they will need to be taken out of your bag and placed in the tray.
