Budget DSLR?

I am considering buying a dslr camer under 1000 australian (833.047 USD). What camera would you reccomend in the digital slr range. Thankyou in advance

The Nikon D40 is a great little camera, very easy to use and quite reasonably priced. It will get you in the Nikon family which is a great place to be. If you buy accessories and lenses, you will be able to use everything on any Nikon that you might upgrade to later on.

Here are a few reviews, in case you have not read them yet. Be sure to note that they are several pages long and some of the reviews also have some sample images that you can look at.

I hate to see people slam the camera because it can't autofocus with older Nikon lenses. It is true that there is a "slight problem" with older Nikon lenses not autofocusing on the D40, but if you do not own a bag full of older lenses, it is not going to be a problem. It is barely a problem anyhow. If you check www.nikonusa.com for "AF-S" lenses, which are ALL 100% compatible with the D40, you will find 23 lenses, including 7 "VR" (vibration Reduction) lenses and one true macro lens with "VR". There are another 25-plus lenses in the current catalog that provide all functions except autofocus as well as many (possibly dozens) "out of print" lenses that will work just as well. In addition, although these lens will not autofocus, most of them will still give focus confirmation. From the D40 manual: "If the lens has a maximum aperture of f/5.6 of faster, the viewfinder focus indicator can be used to confirm whether the portion of the subject in the selected focus area is in focus. After positioning the subject in the active focus area, press the shutter release button halfway and rotate the lens focusing ring until the in-focus indicator is displayed."

The D40 only has 3 autofocus zones arranged horizontally at the center, 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions. This might be considered a limitation, but realistically, most people will find this perfectly adequate, especially if you are moving up from a point and shoot with only a center zone.

You can get the D40 with the 18-55 kit lens at B&H Photo (available through Yahoo! Shopping or at 1-800-622-4987) for $550 (April 2007). You will want to add a decent SD memory card and I recommend a Sandisk Ultra II or Lexar Platinum II - either 1 GB or 2 GB would be great. You can get one from B&H also for $30-45.

The cheapest DSLR that is worth owning is probably the Pentax K110D, and this is coming from a Nikon fan. This is a decent camera.

You can click on individual user comments on this page:

You can also read this review of the K100D, which is the same camera as the K110D, except that it also has image stabilization in the camera:

Check out this set-up. You can get the body, the "kit" lens for $395 after a rebate from B&H Photo in New York. (Rebate ends 4-30-07) You can find B&H by going to Yahoo! Shopping, as they are one of the retailers that Yahoo! links to. You can also call 1-800-622-4987.

"Pentax K110D, 6.1 Megapixel, SLR, Digital Camera Kit with Pentax Zoom Super Wide Angle SMCP-DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL Autofocus Lens." You will still need a memory card, which you can buy for about $30-45, depending on the size you choose.

If you want "shake reduction" built into the body, which is a nice feature, you can get the Pentax K100D for about another hundred dollars.

I don't know if B&H ships to Australia or if the rebate is international, but the information on the cameras is still valid. It's in your budget.

Good luck and enjoy your new camera! Report It

Nikon or Canon ... they are the choice of the pros.

Look at their Pro-sumer models that are under $800 street price. You may go a little over budget when you get the lens and CF cards.

imo, i suggest u could opt for the canon 400d or the nikon D40/40x...if ur thinkin in gettin a Budget Dslr...

but for me...i strongly encourged u to get the canon 400d instead or opt for the nikon D80. why? the canon 400d is a great camera for beginners...easy to use..afforable. it has an AF-motor unlike the nikon D40/40x which can be a hassle as u hav to get nikon lens tat hav built in af-motor which is costly...which is unlike the nikon D80 which is neat camera..but its a tad expensive.

the canon 400d will fit nicely...its a great camera for travellin..light and easy to bring along...nt much of a burden...there is a great learnin curve when handlin the 400d...its nt veri complicated to use if u knw how...and images produce are stunning if u knw hw to use it well.

Nikon D40
Canon XT

my suggestion
go to yahoo shopping
