What should my first camera be?

I'm a broke *** student who is looking for an SLR film or digital and finding it difficult. Not because there is a lack of them but because they are fairly expensive. Especially for me or someone in my position...

I'm a student with a tight budget who is looking for an SLR film or digital and finding it difficult. Not because there is a lack of them but because they are fairly expensive. Especially for me or someone in my position...
maybe unrealistic but $300-$400

I find it difficult to recommend a film camera to a student in your position, even though they would be quite a bit less expensive. You could probably pick-up a used camera body from ebay or even in the 'used' department of a camera store for very little money. (Well, EVERYTHING about photography is expensive. I was able to turn my hobby into a profession, and now it's paying off.) But with a film camera you have the on-going expense of film and processing. That can add up to quite a bit, if you shoot very much!

You might want to check into a used Canon 10D. The technology is a couple of generations old, but I've used this digital camera successfully in the past. But digital has made great strides in the past few years. If there's any way you can afford it, I'd look into a Canon Digital Rebel XT or XTi. You could probably pickup a used EOS lens on ebay.

This probably didn't really answer you question, but I hope it helps you make your decision!

Do you really want an SLR? Canon has a great SLR-like camera. It's the S3 IS. It's a wonderful digital camera and averages on $350. That's relatively cheap compared with similar cameras. You can check it out here:

(You didn't mention how much you can afford. I hope it's not too expensive for you. I'm a student myself. Why don't you try ebay?)

If you go film, you will pay far more in reality. So I suggest digital.

As for inexpensive SLR's, they are out there! And New too!

Many mfr are bringing out new models, so their old models are being reduced in price, AND have rebates! If you don't mind having the latest model, you can have a wonderful camera.

Doing a quick search on CNET Shopper, I was able to find a dozen DSLRS, with lens, under $600

Next time mention the top amount you can spend. People here can pinpoint cameras to recommend in your price range.
