Are CR123A batteries the same as 123 batteries?

I've just bought a new digital slr camera and while I wait for the rechargable battery to arrive I need some more "normal batteries". The batteries that came with the camera were CR123A. When I've been out shopping I can only find 123 batteries, are they the same thing?

I would have thought so.Maybe the A stands for alkaline.
