Has anyone used Aperture as a photo editing software? What else is good?

I'm a mac user and looking to purchase a good SLR digital camera and photo editing software. The purpose for which is to document my paintings and be able to produce high-quality images both online and in slide format (I currently send the digital files to a lab with a film recorder to produce slides). Money is, -of course, an object; but I'm realistic and want to get the best set-up I can for the money. Please respond in laymen's terms, I'm not a techie and I'm an intermediate level photographer but fairly new to digital.

There is a free trial of Aperture at Apple.

Hope this helps.
