Digital cameras have an IR blocking filter in front of the CCD, but few stop all IR light from entering the CCD. To check if your digital SLR is capable of IR photography, take a picture of the transmitting end of your TV remote as you push a button on it. The remote only sends out a pulse of IR light when you push a button, so you'll want a long enough shutter speed to capture it. If the image you take shows the remote lit up, your camera can see at least some IR light. A good filter would be Hoya R72.
