I'm trying to find something with at least 7 Mega pixels and a high optical zoom... This'll be my camera for pretty much the rest of college so I really want to get something durable and on the higher end. I'm not looking for credit-card thing, but I do need something small enough to carry to football games/parties/etc. I'm going for point and shoot rather than SLR...
Any advice/suggestions from the camera gurus of yahoo answers would be much appreciated!! =)
Thank you!!! When you say, "college," and, "small," it makes me think you want something to stick in your shirt pocket and not a camera that is too pick to stow away like this. I know you said you are not looking for a credit-card camera, but I'm going to recommend a very small one anyway, because I think it's the best value and quality in your price range.
Look at the Canon SD1000 (IXUS 70): http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_revi...

If you can go another fifty bucks and really want more zoom, look for a Canon SD700-IS (IXUS 800 IS): http://www.steves-digicams.com/2006_revi...
- See also: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canonsd7... This camera also has image stabilization that you have heard so much about.
Another camera worthy of consideration is the Fujifilm Finepix F31D: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/fujifilm... It doesn't have tons of zoom, but it's a good camera.
I like Jonathan's suggestion about the Canon A710, but I'm thinking that it might prove too big for your purposes. If it's not, it's probably a better suggestion than any of mine. canon 570 IS The Canon Powershot A710 seems a good camera for you. It has 6X zoom, optical image stabilization, and almost fits your 250 price range. It seems to sell for 247 on Amazon. Why you'll want optical image stabilization is because when in parties, there is often insufficient lighting so that you'll need to use a slower shutter speed, which can blur photos, and optical image stabilization is here to help. Keep in mind the A710 is a pretty hefty camera, it's barely in the compact category.
A slimmer model would be Panasonic's TZ series which packs in 10X zoom. There's a TZ1, TZ2, and TZ3. If you want keep to your budget, the TZ1 works perfectly fine, even if may be outdated slightly. The TZ1 at the moment sells for even less than your specified 150 list price. However, it's worth noting that the TZ1 doesn't match your 7 megapixel requirement. I'd like to say that 7 megapixels is unecessary, unless you like to print your photos larger than 8x11 very often. In that case, the TZ2 may fit your bill, though it may possibly break your budget.
Some tips for your puchasing: many people seem to not realize that in dark situations, shutter speeds will slow down and cause blurriness, and that's why I recommend optical image stabilization so often, especially for you since you're going to use this camera at parties. (No, optical image stabilization doesn't work magic, but it doesn help)
Another thing, 5 megapixels is sufficient (but I wouldn't buy anything less than 5) and 6 is fully sufficient, my DSLR is 6 megapixels, and there's a multi-thousand dollar DSLR that's 4 megapixels (Nikon D2H)
Hope this helps. If these models don't work for you, and you want more recommendations, just ask. |
