Digital camera Help? Which camera is for me?

I am shortly going around the world and want to get a really good digital camera and any other necessary equipment to allow me to take really good photos, good landscapes and good city scenes (day and night). Think 'those prints you buy in the poster shop'.

what equipment is required? i want to know about exposure, filters, everything. are there any good books out there that will help? i have a little photgraphic experience with SLR but minimal.

Thanks

The first two answers are both good ones. I recently completed a nine and a half week sailing adventure in the Caribbean. I took a Nikon DSLR with three lenses. A 12-24mm, 24-85mm macro and a 70-300mm. The 70-300mm never left my camera bag. The images (over 12 GB) were made using the two other lenses. On board and seascape shots were with the 12-24mm.

Filter wise, you really need to have skylight filters on your lenses to protect that expensive glass. Scratching or otherwise damaging a filter is much better than having your lens ruined. I would suggest you get a polarizing filter for the front of your normal lens. This will enhance the sky's and reduce reflections in windows, water and other reflective surfaces.

I would recommend either the canon EOS400 or the NikonD80 the Canon retails around the 拢500 mark while the Nikon is more expensive at 拢700 approx

To be fair, any decent digital camera will do everything for you so you won't need filters etc. The best bit of advice is to invest in a good camera with plenty of pixels (more than 6m will suffice although there are plenty of excellent and fairly cheap ones that now do 9m or over) and then get a photo enhance package that you can alter everything when you get back from travelling. Something like ELEMENTS would be more than enough and that's about 拢70. You can crop, change colours, airbrush things out and do everything that will make your own prints you buy in the poster shop. Be conscious though that if you are travelling you don't want a huge camera that will arouse too much interest from thieves!

Nikon D200 and 18-200mm VR Zoom.

Enjoy your trip!

Depending on your budget, I would take two:

The Nikon D200 or D80 paired with the 18-200mm lens will satisfy 99% of your shooting needs, but I would also take along a smaller point and shoot (Nikon s6, s7, or s9) for times where/when the SLR is not appropriate. But LOTS and LOTS of memory chips.

The D80 might be better since it is cheaper and won't be as big a dent in your pocket.

Look at the Panasonic DMC Lumix range @ 6 to 7megapixels.These wide angle, Leica lens cameras give a great performance, are very small and are relatively low cost. Simplicity is the key, with an ingenious range of adjustments, including burst mode, movie setting, and even a setting for taking shots above your head! A large viewing screen, and 5 to 6 times telescopic makes it the 'camera you don't want to put down!'
Have used this camera extensively in UK, Malta, Egypt and Spain with great results. A good reference comes from the cameras.co.uk site

the best thing you can do is to go to the amazon digital cam store : http://astore.amazon.com/digitalcam-20
there you find hundreds of digital cams, all with specifications , reviews, prices ... etc
also they have an accessories section including each and every accessory needed by both professional and amateur photographers. I suggest getting a cam with at least 8 MP
