Is my Camera a SLR?

I have just brought a Fuji Finepix s6500fd digital camera, and i'm not sure if its a SLR? Any word on this? I also have a Fuji Finepix s5600. Is that also a SLR?

Thanks for the answers guys! It seems its a slightly confusing camera because it really is in between the two types! So the new question is......what does a SLR camera have over mine??? Anyone?

So...In answer to your new question --

So the new question is......what does a SLR camera have over mine???

I took a look at the S6500fd, and it's a new camera. For you, at least for right now, a SLR or a DSLR may have nothing over yours.

For me, what my Nikon D200 has is over a S5600FD:
Interchangeable lenses.
Full range of Nikon F mount lenses.
Magensium alloy body.
Nikon i-TTL flash system.
Ability to control multiple flash unites.
Faster continuous shooting rate.
LCD readout for camera settings.
Ease of access to controls for adjusting camera settings.

To name a few.

No. Neither of them are. Just because it's big and traditional SLR styling doesn't make it SLR.

Find out why here:

It sure looks like one. Can you remove the lens and put another one on? There's the test!

Okay, I got a closer look at some of those images, and it appears you have one lens fixed onto the body, so no, it's not an SLR. It is "SLR-like" though.

I believe this is what you have:
SLR-like cameras 鈥?"bridge cameras"
The "SLR-like" or "advanced" cameras (e.g. the Olympus SP series, some Nikon Coolpix models, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC V, DSC H, DSC F and DSC R series, the Panasonic FZ series, the Canon PowerShot A, G, S and Pro models, Minolta DiMAGE 7/7i/7hi, A1, A2, A200, and several Fujifilm FinePix models) offer through-the-lens (TTL) viewing through the focusing lens, projected onto its eye-level electronic viewfinder (EVF) as well as the rear LCD screen. The difference compared to a DSLR is that the viewfinder shows a digitally created copy of the TTL image, whereas the viewfinder in a DSLR shows the actual optical TTL image via its mirror. An EVF image reacts more slowly to view changes and has a lower resolution than an optical viewfinder, but achieves parallax-free viewing using less bulk and mechanical complexity than a DSLR with its reflex viewing system. The limitation of a bridge digital camera is its fixed lens, typically limited to about a 12:1 focal-length range. On the other hand, the fixed lens minimizes the risk of getting dust on the imaging sensor.

Sorry, no it isn't, but its a very good camera. Fuji have this to say about it
"This camera's sensor and processor combination has already made waves in the photographic industry. Leading photo website dpreview.com commented: "Fuji has managed, with this sensor and processor combination, closer than ever before to 'SLR-like' output from a compact camera"."

Yes to both - had a look on the Fuji website and both were listed under the SLR section

They are both SLR cameras. SLR (single lens reflex) cameras have a mirror and a prism to enable you to view the picture that you are about to take through the actual camera lens instead of through a separate lens above or off to one side.

The test of an SLR is whether it has a single lens and a reflex mirror/prism.

An SLR is one where you look through the viewfinder and it goes via (or rather comes via) two prisms so that you are in fact looking through the lens. SLR stands for Single lens reflex.

no, neither of them

go to howstuffworks.com
to find out what an SLR is

These models is not SLR but are bridging camera's between SLR's and compacts.

Personally I think it's an excellent camera, doing away with the need to change lens's and all the risks that go with that (dust & dirt in the camera body and on the lens).

Movie mode on the 6500 is really good quality as well.
