Is this an slr camera?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fuji-FinePix-Dig...

SLR stands for "single lens reflex"

Single lens means that when you compose the shot you are looking through the camera's lens and not a separate viewfinder. Only one piece of glass does the looking = single lens.

The "reflex" part refers to either a prism or a mirror which allows you to look through an optical viewfinder and see what's going on through the single lens. At the point at which the photo is taken, this prism or mirror "reflexes" or flips up out of the way to allow light to reach the film/sensor. As soon as the shot has been taken, it lowers back into place so that you can once again see through the lens.

The Fuji S6500 is a Single lens camera but not a single lens reflex if that makes sense. The LCD or EVF does see through the lens, but nothing reflexes out of the way to take a shot.

So the answer is no, this is not a true SLR camera.

However I have its predecessor the S7000 and it is a lovely little camera. Even though I have since moved on to Nikon SLRs, I still like this camera, and the shots taken by this camera are indistinguishable from ones taken with my SLRs.

Don't get me wrong, the SLRs are much better cameras. For example manual focusing under very low light is really not possible with the S6500 whereas with a true SLR, this is relatively easy.

If you want a high quality camera for general shooting for your own private use, then this is a lovely camera. If you ever intend to be professional, then don't waste money on compacts, get an SLR straight away.

I hope this helps.

JUST TO NOTE: The information given earlier by Jonathon is incorrect. My digital SLRs most definitely have mirrors which flip up out of the way. They sound very similar to my film SLR when they take a shot. I know they have the mirrors because I can see them every time I clean the camera. Any Top Contributor who owns a DSLR that may answer this question will back me up here.

There are probably both kinds of dSLR out there, with and without a mirror. Confusing stuff! Report It

no, digi

yes it is

No, it's a compact, not a true SLR, but it sounds like it has a good optical zoom.

yeppers :o)

Look at the 3rd from last item on manufactures descp...it says compact not SLR.
From customer reviews sounds like a nice camera

Defo not an SLR. This is a prosumer compact.

hi ya ! my partner said it means Single lens reflex hope that helps

No. It's a very high end point and shoot camera.

Yes it is - SLR - Single LEns Reflex camera, abd basically one where you look through the viewfinder and the mirrors inside it make you see through the lens.

It is a digital one and thats confusing people, and there is only one fixed lense and that is confusing people (most SLR cameras have interchangeable lenses, but they dont have to)

Hope that clears things up a bit

No, SLR cameras give you the ability to change the lens. They are typically more expensive but are a higher quality camera.

No, it isn't an SLR. It's a superzoom compact. It has a fixed lens though this has a wide range of focal lengths that should suit pretty much all of your needs. It also appears to have an electronic viewfinder which gives through-the-lens viewing just like an SLR. Some of these can be of low resolution so you should have a look through one to see how it suits.

I can't say if this is the best superzoom on the market but it's the kind of thing you should be looking at unless you have a particular technical requirement for an SLR or just like spending lots of money.

I mean no disrespect but the nature of your question suggests that you have no special requirements of a camera and a high-end compact like this will suit all your photographic needs at a fraction of the cost of a digital SLR.

Just to clear something up...

The term SLR has changed since the digital revolution - I don't know for sure but I seriously doubt there's an actual mirror inside a digital SLR, since the CCD can just be turned on and off there is no point, and the viewfinders are always digital too. Since when did you ever hear a mechanical mirror flipping up and down when you press the shutter on a digital camera!

In digital terms, the term 'SLR' means a digital camera that one can change the lens on, usually at the high-end of the camera price range. Although it resembles one, this is not a dSLR (it says so in the stats - compact). Looks like a very good camera for the money though!

yes and no,
its a example of one but to be a true SLR you would buy separate lens for it.....

I think teef_au has given you the most accurate answer so far.

I started into serious digital photography with a Fuji S5000, which I still have as there are situations where it is far easier/better to use than an SLR due to smaller weight and live backscreen preview. (I'm a pilot of a small aircraft and sometime want to take photos - squinting through an SLR viewfinder just wouldn't be an option! Most SLRs do NOT have a live preview on the back although some of the newer ones do)

However SLRs (and I now have a Pentax K100D dSLR) are much more responsive and as mentioned earlier have ability to change lenses. It definitely has a mirror as part of the "reflex" bit.

One of the major differences between a prosumer such as the Fuji and a genuine dSLR is the size of the sensor. Quality of images (assuming a good photographer!) can be so much better with a dSLR as the sensor is much larger than the prosumer even if it has a lower pixel count. For example the Olympus SP550 Camera which I had for a couple of months is a prosumer is 7.1Mp but the Image Quality of my 6Mp Pentax K100D is far better. I have this camera it is NOT a SLR camera, a definition of SLR:

The single-lens reflex camera, more commonly known by the abbreviation SLR, uses a mirror placed between the lens and the film to project the image seen through the lens to a matte focusing screen. Most SLRs use a pentaprism to observe the image via an eyepiece, but there are also other finder arrangements, such as the waist-level finder or porro prisms.

one defining characteristic of a SLR is the ability to remove and switch lenses.

I also have a Digital SLR (Canon EOS 400d)...
