For image prints, get the Digital SLR, it will take better pictures and you will be happier with the results.
If you are just going to email prints or upload them to your computer, just get the most megapixels for your buck. Some digitals take mpeg videos as well. Check with your local camera/electronics store for details.

I've had a FUJI FinePix for about 4 years now, and it still takes great pictures, only problem is it uses xD cards, not SD cards. go to canonusa.com
very good choices The issue is the size of the sensor.
Compact cameras have small sensors. DSLR's have larger sensors. A larger sensor gives you better image quality, period!
Definately go to a camera shop and feel the cameras though. What I like you might hate. Definately look at the Canon EOS line. The 30D is wonderful. ok someone from the Nikon side has to put a word in.
Buy a Nikon D80 and fuggetaboutit.
