I'm looking to update my film SLR camera to digital. Can anyone recommend one?

I'm looking to update my film SLR camera to digital. Can anyone recommend one?

My question to you is what do you have now? How much equipment to you have for you film camera.

If you've already got autofocus lenses, then I would recommend you look at the digital cameras made by your film camera's manufacturer. If you what you have are manual focus lenses, then there are a couple of considerations.

I've been shooting Nikon cameras for years. When I made to move from film to digital, I did look at Canon, but since I already had lenses that would work with the Nikon F mount, I decided to get a Nikon D200. I have the lenses I've purchased specifically for it, plus the lenses I had for previous film bodies.

You can do this with Nikon, their older, manual lenses, for the most part will work on their newer bodies. Canon, when they swichted from manual to autofocus changed their mount for their old FD to the new EF mount. Without an adapter, FD lenses won't fit the new EOS bodies.

That said, the Canon 30D or 40D would be an excellent choice, but from personal experience, I highly recommend the D200. It's a great camera.

Depends what kind of SLR you have right now.
If you have a Canon i recommend the Canon 40D
For Nikon i recommend D80 or D200

buy a Lumix. light, not realy a SLR, but good lens, anti-shake, good service-I dropand damage zoom control and they charge only $11 bucks.

I own a Canon Rebel Xti and can't say enough good things about it. Compared to an older Nikon digital I replaced, the menus are so much more straight forward and the camera is just generally easier to use. It still has incredible capability to adjust and tinker with exposure and aperture settings. The pictures are breathtaking and the 10 megapixal size can enlarge quite nicely up to poster size without pixelating.

Having said that, the prevailing advice is always to buy the camera that takes the lenses you want because you keep the lenses and trade up the camera body. Lenses tend to cost more over time too. If your film SLR was auto-focus, chances are you can use those lenses on a dSLR of the same brand. That should weigh heavily on your decision.

To save money, consider getting a body that uses the same lenses you already have.

Nihl is exactly right. I followed a similar path when I went from Nikon 35mm slr to my first Nikon DSLR. The older lenses I had gave me an immediate system to use. Otherwise, I'd have been starting from scratch, and in a very expensive way.

If you have a Canon EOS system or a Nikon AF system camera, go with those systems. Canon FD mount lenses aren't compatible with their excellent AF 35mm and digital cameras.

The same goes for the Pentax K-mount lens. Look at the Pentax DSLR line.

If you have a Minolta AF system, look at the very nice Sony Alphas as Sony's inherited the Minolta/Konica camera technology.

Olympus created a new lens mount for their DSLR design, so there is zero compatibility with the 35mm cameras.

NOW, here's a disclaimer to the above. If you only have one lens or only have a couple of 3rd party optics (Vivitar, etc), then consider starting fresh.

You can get an excellent DSLR (Nikon D40) with an 18-55mm zoom for under $500 currently. There are similar deals from Canon, Olympus, and Pentax. Go to a store that has different models on display and handle each. Which one(s) fit your hands and your style? Are the controls easy to manage and easy to understand? Is it neither too large or to small, too heavy or too light? Are the auto modes easy enough and are there enough manual settings to unleash your creativity?

Let us know how your search goes. I hope this is helpful for you.
