Which digital SLR cameras have minimum lag between depressing the shutter button & shutter closure? NikonD40x?

The earlier digital cameras had substantial lag between the time you depressed the shutter button and when it actually takes the picture, quite unlike the traditional film cameras, where the picture gets taken instantaneously. As a result, I found most digital cameras poor in terms of response time while capturing action. Has there been an improvement in this lately? I have not been able to locate information on this subject online. Can someone suggest a suitable digital SLR that provides something close to a film camera?

NONE of the earlier DSLR's had any substantial shutter lag. They were built on quality, time-tested film bodies, so no noticeable shutter lag plagued them.

Only the compact digital cameras had and have this issue.

There are five major attractions to buying a DSLR.
* Interchangeable lenses
* No shutter lag
* Larger sensors (physical size)
* Superior on-board processing electronics
* Uses all the modern auto-focus lenses of their 35mm brothers.

Take an SD memory card with you to your camera store and take some "action" shots with the D40x. Then try it with one of the compact digital cameras. You will immediately see (and feel) the difference. While you are there, look at the D80 as well.

41 milliseconds is a far cry from 0.8 to 2 seconds. Most of that lag is because the mirror has to get out of the way. Not too shabby Report It

I use the canon rebel. They are great quality at the most reasonable price. They take the picture almost instantly. I don't experience any lag when taking a picture.

this is the sort of question automatic shooters ask.......if you want speed - shoot with manual focus

Capturing sharp images w/ minimal shutter delay has less to do with which SLR and more to do with your shooting technique and lens quality.

Prefocus your camera when the action will take place. For example I shoot alot of images of races (cars and motorcycles). I usually prefocus on a spot on the track where the subject will be when I need to take the picture.

Alternatively as has been suggested you can do the same and then place your camera in manual focus mode.

Also, the more light there is, the more contrast your camera can see and the faster it can focus. That said a "faster" lens (larger aperture such as f2.8 or f1.4, etc.) is also better for getting fast shots.

Last but not least, lenses where the focusing servo is contained in the lens versus relying on the SLR motor to focus it are usually faster.

Do note that the Nikon D40 you mentioned can only autofocus using Nikon AFS or Sigma HSM type lenses where the focus servo is in the lens. If you use a standard lens then you will have to manually focus them.

Myself I have a Nikon D70 with a plethora of various lenses for the many types of shooting I do.

HTH.

How does 0.1 second from button to capture sound?
That's how long it takes a D40 to cache (capture into memory) an image. A second later, it appears on the lcd screen. Check out the chart on this webpage. And read the entire review, while you're at it.

A D40 is capable of shooting at 2.5 fps (frames per second). I think that's a pretty impressive speed. If you want it even faster, set the meter and focus to manual. That eliminates two steps EVERY digital & film camera currently needs before capturing the moment.

Here's some action shots I took with a D50, the older brother to the D40.

I hope this helps.
