I am looking to buy a new digital SLR camera and have a budget of about 拢500. Any recommendations??

Pentax K100D with 18-55 lens (street price $699 USD) and Pentax SMC 50-200 (Street price $250 USD) so for under $950 USD

EBAY - can get new stuff on there too

Amazon.com

Play.com

Canon Rebel XT or the new model XT+ (10MP and larger LCD display, but not much else difference)

I have a Fuji S5100 and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it. It comes with a 10x optical zoom. It takes fab pix!!! I paid about $425.00 for it.

I've never seen one for that price. In the USA they go for around 800 bucks.

I got a nice Panasonic Lumix camera 6 mp with Leica lens.

It's not an SLR but it really takes great pics.
It has a great zoom that can go up to 48x on digital setting!

It's a great camera. Check it out.

I have been using digital cameras for years and have bought several for different purposes. It is more what the camera can do than a brand name.
Heres some of the things I look out for.
Good optical zoom X 7 X8 X9 ect. I use software for digital zooming.
Hi Megapixel rating. 8 9 or 10
Can it shoot in RAW mode as well as jpeg.
The memory is important too. It will effect how quickly you can take the next picture.(Memory stick PRO is much faster than CF Drive)
Does the camera have video?
Is the video limited to 30sec 3 minutes or Unlimited. And of course must have sound recording with video.
Can I vary the internal flash brightness.

Another thing is its ease of use. I generally buy from shops. This way I can get a feel for the camera and play with the buttons and features, working out if I will learn the camera quickly.

Do a bit of research before you buy to get other peoples opinions of different cameras. There are plenty of forums and websites.
If you buy well you will only have to buy once.

My favourite camera is the Sony dsc f-828. 3 years, dozens of drops and over 20,000 pictures and videos. It's sitll goin' strong.

All the pics on that website were from the Sony

u dont get an slr for such budget. an slr would be costing not less than 1000 bucks.

I do not know exactly what the exchange rate is today, but I am sure that this will fit in your budget, so I'll just post it and let you check out the local prices yourself.

Get a Nikon D50. It has a few "consumer friendly" automatic modes, but still offers total photographic control when you are ready to take charge. Get a "decent" lens, such as their Nikkor AF-S 18-70 f/3.5-4.5G ED DX lens and not the "kit" lens. This pair will cost you less than $1,000 and you will be very happy with it. If you want more lenses for the same money, you can get this camera with two "kit" lenses that are decent, but not as good for the long haul as the one I mentioned. When you are ready to add lenses, the sky is the limit with Nikon. Get a 1 GB memory card, such as the Sandisk "Ultra" for decent write speed. You can get these in the $30 range. An "Extreme" is faster, but I doubt anyone would notice the difference except a pro.

If you CAN go for it, get the D80, but that would eat up about your entire budget. Maybe you can find some change under the cushions...

Someone else wil undoubtedly recommend a similar Canon camera and I will not dispute that choice. I know Nikons and someone else knows Canons. Both are excellent cameras and you will never outgrow their system offerings.

It depends..... how many pounds are in a dollar??

I would look at the Nikon D50. It's a great camera, very little shutter lag time, comes with a decent lens, is easy to use, and then when you have more money you can buy additional Nikon lenses, which I think are the best around. it's alot of camera for the money and gets universally great reviews. It has only been on the market for less than a year and so has most up to date Nikon technology. You can use it in automatic mode until you become familiar with it, and then experiment with aperture priority or full manual mode. It has a good pop up flash on the camera too.

That would be almost $1,000 USD and for that you can buy a new Nikon D70s with lens in the kit. They come with several lens and you can either pick a kit or simply buy the body and then select the best lens for your use.

I have the D70s and the new D80. Both are great cameras. The D80 is several hundred USD more but it offers a lot more and has replaced the D100.
