The Nikon D40 has been rated the number 1 entry level DSLR by Consumer Reports. $520 with a good 18-55mm lens from many reputable shopping sites. This is not more than a good point and shoot and will allow you to get your feet wet with an SLR--has great auto and scene modes plus you have all the manual creative controls for when you become more experienced and want to experiment. Go with Olympus E-500 or newer. They come with two kit lens that are much better than what cannon or nikon has to offer on their kit lens. I have the E-500 and it is great except for at high ISO. The new version has greater ISO settings and built in Image Stabilizer. I was like you. I learned how to shoot my E-500 in dummy mode and I have no branched out. You will not regret it if you're ready to go DSLR, just beware that you will to change lens to get the same zoon capability of the all in one super zoom cameras. Again, before considering the Nikon D series or the Canon Rebel series, look into how they handle "image stabilization/vibration reduction." Should purchase a telephoto lense, you have to find out how to control your shaking the lens and do you want to drag along a tripod. Therefore, check into the awarding winning Pentax KD DSLRs beginning with the Pentax K100D starter kit with two Pentax lenses: 18-55 mm. normal and a 50-200 mm. telephoto. The starter kit sells for $600 at samys.com. The Pentax lens system is far more affordable than Nikon or Canon lenses. All digital SLRs have a full auto mode.
