Whats a good (cheapish) Digital SLR camera?

lol...there's no such thing as a cheap SLR - they are all pricey, and it costs even more to get the lenses and other accessories. Check eBay - you can usually find a deal there. I think the Canon Rebel is the least expensive I've seen lately.

Um... I know it isn't technically a proper SLR but if they're a bit too pricey you should check out the Minolta Dimage Z-series.
They vary in specs, but are good. My brother has a mid/upper-range one and he's a photography expert (sort of).

Well when you think of digital SLR you don't usually think of cheap. 'Affordable' is probably a better word. But remember, quality is worth paying for.
I think the Canon Rebel XT (350D) is an affordable, excellent digital camera.
Canon and Nikon are the two better performing digital slr cameras.

For value, the Pentax DL2 and Samsung GX-1s can't be beat right now. The Samsung is a rebadged Pentax. If you are in the UK, I think Jessop's is offering a special deal on the GX-1s with two lenses. In the U.S., the DL2 is currently available online with a lens for $400 after rebates. Canon and Nikon are better than Pentax in that they have a wider array of new autofocus lenses available. Other than that, I would argue that the Pentax is just as well-featured.

I'll agree with the last user in that Canon/Nikon have more AF lenses available..... HOWEVER Pentax is/has been the most universal SLR/DSLR system since it's inception. Take Canon, They abandoned their older lenses (FD mount) when the went AF. Nikon at least kept the same mount, but with any of the newer entry level/mid level SLR/DSLR (eg N75/N80 film, D50/D70/D70S digital) you loose all metering when you mount the old manual focus lenses.

Pentax and only Pentax allows you to keep metering with all their MF K-mount lenses (A and M series) AND... AND.... AND with a <$20 adapter keep metering (center weighted) with 40 yr old M42/screw mount lenses. There is some very fine Super Takumar SMC M42 lenses that you could pickl up for a steal (<$50 5 yrs ago that go on ebay for over $500 last week.

eg Super Takumar SMC 85mm 1.8 regualrly sells for over $350 and it's a 1970's lens.... that says something for Pentax optics.

For "good and cheap," I suggest you check out the Nikon D50. I'm betting that, since you are asking this question, you do not already have a lot of money invested in a closet full of lenses from any particular brand of camera. Look to the future. The D50 is a really good camera and it will open up a world of lenses and other accessories to you. Someone will surely recommend a Canon in the same price range and this would be a good choice also. I'm just not familiar with the Canon line.
