What is a Digital SLR camera?

I am looking to upgrade from a very old 35mm Pentax and I have no idea what to get! I just need to know what an SLR is.

SLR = single-lens reflex. This is a type of camera in which the image is captured on a "viewfinder".

Now a digital SLR camera is essentially a conventional SLR camera with a CCD or CMOS image sensor (with processing circuitry ofcourse) in the place of the conventional film.

From personal experience, i can assure that the Nikon D50 will be a great buy and a worthy upgrade.

A digital SLR camera is one that has removable lenses and usually an external slot for an additional flash. Mostly used by professionals or people with a lot of money to spend. Point and shoot cameras are the ones most commonly used. You just turn then on and go

SLR means single lens reflex. What it amounts to is that there's a mirror that reflexes the image coming the lens to the view finder. In other words, what you see in the view finder is exactly what you'll get in the finished picture.
Pentax made some excellent SLR cameras in the film age. I used one for many years. Now I use a Canon Rebel SLR.
