Pentax *ist DS or Nikon D100?

So ive been looking for a new D-Slr camera lately. I just need something easier than film. At first i was looking at the Nikon D40 because it was in my general price range and i was going to buy it new, but then i started looking on craigslist and found great deals on many cameras. I looked for about a month and found a Pentax *ist DS and a nikon D100. I did research on both and i found that the D100 is like 4 years older than the *ist DS that didnt matter much to me because my Nikon N2000 that i use now is about 14 years old. So i basicly found possitive reviews on both, but it seems to me that the D100 is better quality because in the reviews they were conpairing it to the D200 and thats a nice camera.
So anyway please give me your opinions and i will strongly take them to help me decide. Thanks

The D100 is about 5 years old. In digital cameras, that's like the Bronze Age. On top of that, a D100 would not come with a warranty.

For someone just starting out, I would nearly always recommend a brand-new camera with a warranty, rather than buying a used camera and inheriting its problems. On top of that, you have no idea how the camera has been treated or when key systems, like the shutter, will break without warning.

On top of that, the D100 has a tendency to underexpose, particularly with flash shots. I don't find the color to be as good as the newer D40 SLR for jpeg shooting.

There's a reason why the older cameras are cheap: it's because they are used and have no warranty.

So, if you can afford a new camera, you should go for it. My vote is for neither the *ist DS or D100, but rather for a new camera with a warranty and support like the D40.

EDIT: For goodness's sake, do not try to buy from Broadway Photo as Edwin suggested. They are a ripoff store! They have one of the lowest ratings ever for a store at store ratings sites like http://www.resellerratings.com:

Why buy old, outdated technology? You can buy a Sony A200 with an 18-70mm lens for less than $500.00 from Broadway Photo (broadwayphoto.com) with free shipping.

The A200 is a 10mp camera with Super SteadyShot (Sony's version of Image Stabilization) in the camera body and it uses every Minolta Maxxum AF lens made since 1985.

Of course, if you own a bag full of Nikon lenses you'd be better off buying a Nikon DSLR.

EDIT!!

OOPS! I meant to say I saw that price at Broadway Photo. I usually suggest keh.com or bhphotovideo.com or adorama.com. As penance I shall lash myself with a 36 exposure roll of Ilford XP2 Super.
