What does "SLR" stand for when talking about digital cameras?

Should this mean something to someone besides camera buffs?

It has nothing to do with digital specifically. The SLR can be film or digital. Single lens reflex just refers to the fact that you are looking through one lens, (the lens that actually is used for the photo), and a mirror is reflecting the image up into a viewfinder for you to see. When you press the shutter, the mirror moves up out of the way so light can strike the film or digital sensor.

There are also TLR cameras.. You view through one lens and the photo is taken with an identical lens directly under it.

The SLR camera has removable lenses and can be controlled as to shutter speeds, apertures, and exposures much better than the typical point and shoot style.

It is not just a term for camera buffs, it is something you should know when you become serious about creating excellant photos.

Single Lens Reflex

As Eric said, single lens reflex. This means that you're taking the photo through the same lens you are viewing it through, which is not the case in other types of cameras. Most SLR's have interchangeable lenses.

SLR-like means a camera that has some of the features of a SLR, but no interchangeable lenses and a much smaller sensor.

DSLR is usually a digital camera that is based upon a 35mm SLR camera body and has all their features and more.

Camera buff is an interesting term. Camera buffs and professional photographers know the advantages of using SLR cameras.

The more you read the questions in this venue, the more you will learn about the differences between point and shoot cameras and DLSR's

It's a Single Lens Reflex, which is a type of camera that uses a prism and mirror system to accurately convey what the camera "sees" to the photographer, as opposed to View cameras which show a slightly different image through the viewfinder.

And no, this is photographer's jargon. It's not likely for non-photographers to know what SLRs are, let alone TLRs.
