Polarizing Filter?

Will a polarizing filter work on a digital SLR? What about other filters?

Filters were usually used on film cameras (remember them?) to trick the film. Will they give the same effects on a digital slr?

Yes - for as long as it's a circular polarizer it will work just fine. If it's linear - it will still have the effect, but it will confuse auto focus and exposure metering, so you'll be up to shooting on manual, just like in the old times!

Other filters will work as well. Your camera may try to compensate the cooling/warming filter effects if it's set to auto white balance. So set it to daylight (6000 degrees K) to have the filters produce a full effect you would expect with them ( this is the temperature for which most regular film is balanced). Though, of course with those temperature filters - you can change it later in photoshop. And if photographing in RAW, even more so!

The special effect filters - of course! I, for example, think a good diffuser is much better than trying to achieve the same effect in photoshop later on. And of course all those starlight and others are going to do just as well as in film...

Finally - the ND filter will do just what you expected it to do, and I always keep a UV filter on my dSLR, as it is a lot cheaper than my lens, should it take a hit, plus who likes the hazed pictures? It affects dSLR just like that film one!

Have fun shooting, and don't recycle those old filters, just yet!
LEM.

You don't need to "trick" the film anymore. All the white balance is done by you telling your camera what lighting you are shooting in.

All auto-focus lenses use circular polarizing filters.

You will find a UV or skylight filter good insurance against damaging the front element of your lens.

If you need to shoot at slow shutter speeds in sunlight, an ND filter will help you do that.

And that is it ... keep your filters for your 35mm cameras, but the day of carrying around eight different filters for each lens everywhere is over.

One huge prob with sylight filters is if you are shooting anything with lights on coming at you, there will be a ghost of those lights somewhere on the digital exposure.

I had one on my telephot lens and had to take it off.
