Should I go for Fuji S5700 for zoom or Nikon D40 for SLR quality?

Both seem to be good cameras but have different uses. I do like to take close up and long distance shots but wouldn't be able to buy an equivalant zoom for some time on the D40, the S5700 or in fact S5800 are available for under 拢110 and the D40 is available for 拢276 which is good value for money. I realise that they are two different lots of requirements but I want relatively good quality and multiple different functions (I currently have cybershot so I realise any of the above will be an improvement!).
Any input would be great.
Thanks

Just to say the D40 is being sold on amazon and there seemed to be no great complaints about it.

IMO you are comparing apples to oranges.

If convenience and portability are important, then choose the Fuji S5700.

If maximum versatility and image quality is important, then the DSLR is the better choice.

IMO you'd be wise to visit digitalcameraguide.com and compare comparably priced DSLRs from Sony, Canon, Pentax, Fuji, Olympus, Nikon and Sigma before deciding which to buy. You may just find that ones from Sony and Pentax offer more features and benefits than the comparable Nikon or Canon.

Be very careful with choosing where to buy. Make absolutely certain the price includes everything it should and that the warranty is valid in your country. Ask for warranty coverage in writing. If the seller says "Yeah, sure, it has a full warranty" and refuses to state in writing that the warranty is good for your country, shop elsewhere. Most reviews I've read have a sidebar or paragraph dedicated to "What's In The Box" which tells you exactly what the camera manufacturer includes. Some unscrupulous sellers remove everything, sell the camera cheap, and then offer an "accessory pack" (which consists of what should have been in the box) for an inflated price - so you end up paying more.

Good luck!

First of all A DSLR has a sensor about 15 times larger then a P&S camera or SLR (like).

Second I would question anyone selling a D40 for that low of a price. Is it used?? Is is damaged?? Are you getting a us warannty????

In Short the D40 will give you better performance, better image quality, and has the ability to use the vast amount of Nikon/Nikor Glass.

go for Canon EOS400 /Rebel Xti instead. Not all that much more than a D40 but with far higher resolution. All supplied lenses with these kits are pretty crap, nikon lens at this price no better or worse than any others. If you must buy nikon then look at the D40x instead. Canon 400 is better and cheaper.

personally i would always choose the Nikon!

i have seen some pictures from the D40 and they are breathtaking, Nikon are known for their lenses and if your spending that much i would go for the Nikon

D40. You can always add a mega-zoom lens at a later date.

Mega-zoom digitals aren't all they're cracked up to be.

Nikon....Hands down the best choice
