Best Nikon Digital SLR. (i don't have a buget :)?

i'm looking at Nikons, what's the difference between
d40
d80
d200
dwhatever there is

Money isn't that big of an issue
i want a good camera for portraits, closeups, sports, and landscape, i'll be traveling a lot too, so for just about everything

The best Nikon SLR, bar price, is the Nikon D3. I own one, and I can tell you it's head and shoulders above any other Nikon camera and just about every other camera out there.

But in addition to the body, you need to get good lenses.

If money is no object, get:
1) Nikon D3, a 14-24mm lens, a 24-70mm f/2.8 Nikon lens and a 70-200mm VR AF-S Nikon lens. For closeups, try a 105mm micro-Nikkor lens.

If money is a concern, you can:
2) a Nikon D300 with the same lenses.

A good body paired with the best lenses will get you the right gear to do portraits, closeups, sports, and landscapes.

Thanks Pooky!

If your budget is flexible, then I would suggest you look at the Nikon D300 and a 18-200mm VR lens.

This combination will get you started and should last you many years before you outgrow it, the lens will last for decades.

IF you can afford it, buy the Nikon D3 and a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. This camera will keep you going for a long, long time.

EDIT: The Nikon D3 will use any of the DX lenses Nikon makes, so if you already have some, you will not have to replace them if you buy the Nikon "full frame" camera body

D80 is a very good camera, I own one and am very satisfied with it. If you're intent on buying a Nikon I'd recommend it to you. If you're willing to consider Canon DSLRs as well and can afford it, I'd take a look at EOS 5D, which is the one that I would have bought if I could afford it. It's very nice and has a 12.8 mp full frame sensor.

If you want continuous, fast shooting, D80 mightn't be your best option as it doesn't have the best burst rate. Digital Camera magazines can be very informative, and you should try out a few cameras before you buy one, to get a feel for them.

Have you done any research at all? Have you looked at http://www.nikonusa.com website and read the specs on there cameras? What about reviews at Popular Photography ( http://www.popphoto.com ). Your question is too generalized.

How much experience do you have with a camera (of any kind). Have you used a film SLR before?

The few experts here (Fhotoace, Dr. Sam et al) can tell you what they think but at least, you know, look around first, and if you have a specific question on a certain model, ask a question.

By the way, how many lenses are you planning to buy?

Simple, buy the most costly one you can. Figure on $1,500 +for Nikon's top of the line. You get what you pay for.

The Best would be the D3 followed by the D300

From the choices above I would get a D40 or a D200. Skip the D80

If money is no object might as well get the d3
